ToddSampson.com: Are You Retweetable?

  • msitarzewski · 1 year ago
This is a great topic... but I have another one for you to think about. What do you think the etiquette of retweeting with comments is, especially in tight retweets? Can you edit the tweet to make it fit with your comments? :)
  • toddsampson · 12 months ago
Interesting thought. I have always been anti-editing, personally. But I can see the argument for both sides.

If you need more space, I would probably blog the response and link to it via Twitter or just put in a link to the original tweet message you are responding to.

The problem with that is that it loses the RT function. I get what you're saying, but I don't think it has the right affect. Sooper neat to watch this platform grow though, isn't it?
  • toddsampson · 12 months ago
Agreed, for the most part on the RT stuff, but an (RT @user http://posturl) at the end of a tweet wouldn't kill it entirely. Besides the RT is more about forwarding a concept to people following you than giving your take on it. Two tweets might make the most sense in that case. RT the message in the first tweet and give your comment in the second. Something like "CO: " for Comment On (or "RE: " to follow the more standard reply format) might work as well; but it would need wide adoption for people to understand what is going on.

Also agreed on the platform comment if you define "platform" as the service itself, it's evolving usage by end-users, and 3rd party offerings built around the core system. Those are changing very frequently. The service itself is remaining relatively consistent -- which is fine if they weren't limiting what services like Gnip can re-syndicate. Due to this last factor, it is starting to feel to me that it is a bit to important to be a service as opposed to a standard (like email)... In any case, it is fun to watch it evolve.

Retweeting is not that bad as long as you give credits to the original creator of the tweet. Well once you statr tweeting you can't help but to do it over and over again

You don't really need the colon, do you?
  • toddsampson · 8 months ago
Not really... That seemed to be the most popular retweet formatting when I wrote the post. Lately I have seen a number of Twitter clients that built-in RT leave the colon out.

    Thanks for bring that up.
